Big Hair

Inspired by ‘upstyles’ and weaving techniques from the 1960s of Tokyo, especially by the pioneering work of famous geisha hair master Junji Noburyu (or ‘Shinryu’), photographer Joe Lai (b. 1977, French) and hairstylist Heitai Cheung (b. 1989, Hong Kong) were inspired by Noburyu’s passion and adapted his techniques for modern Asian women. The foundational book of techniques used in this collection was originally a technical reference, but Lai and Cheung discovered a new artistic dimension in its pages. The participating models had long dreamed of being styled in this classical hairstyle. Heitai Cheung spent a full year refining the methods required to complete the series. This is the first edition, limited to 500 copies.
